47 - owning your future: letting go of cultural expectations and moving your family abroad

Although now I'm not sure I would want to call anywhere other than Alabama home, there was once a time when I dreamt of living in cities across the world. Of learning languages and studying cultures. Of meeting new people. Of adventure.

So naturally, when I heard Meghana Kamdar’s story of moving her family of 5 from California to Portugal, I couldn't help but want to hear more of her story and share it with you. This mama struggled with the expectations to focus so heavily on her career and dreamt of a slower life with more time with her family. And in 2020, she and her husband took the leap of faith to do just that. Today, we dive into that conversation about what led to the move, how she and her husband were able to do it, and the need for each of us to take a closer look at what fills us. Meghana reminds us that there will never be a right time, and sometimes you just have to jump in and figure it out.

Such a great conversation with so many takeaways... go ahead and press play!

Meghana Kamdar is a wife, mom of three, an entrepreneur, global expat, and executive life coach. She is a second-generation, South-Asian American originally from the San Francisco, Bay Area in California. She supports busy parents create a life of more freedom by redefining what success looks like for each unique family so they can own their time, prioritize family, and explore personal pursuits without compromising.

In January 2020, she and her husband packed up their three kids, left the United Stated, and relocated to Lisbon, Portugal in pursuit of a lifelong dream: a life of more freedom.

The move abroad was made possible by deeply believing and having the courage to follow through. She focused on the higher vision she held for her life, her family, and her future. The fruits of this inner work resulted in a life redesign, and together with husband, they created enough passive income to become financially-free and make the move abroad feasible.

Their new lifestyle offers incredible freedom, but most of all, it offers the freedom of their time. With time freedom, she has crafted a life that centers on her highest priorities: family, connection, health, learning, and meaningful impact. There’s even time to experience slow travel during extended family holidays.

Meghana says that her journey and lifestyle is proof that dreams really do come true, even with three little people at your heels! But you must not wait for the right time, but create that ‘right time.’ And that right time usually isn’t someday. IT’s RIGHT NOW!
